Luc Boivin became interested in drumset and
percussion at a very young age. He decided to take his first percussion lessons
in 1969 at l'École de musique Vincent d'Indy in Montreal.
Fascinated by percussion instruments and firmly decided to continue
studying, he was admitted the year after at McGill University's Faculty of
music, in Pierre Béluse's class, and gradutated in 1978.
During his studies at McGill, Luc had the opportunity to be involved
in many training experiences, particularly by playing in the McGill Percussion
Ensemble where he discovered contemporary music. Before the end of his studies,
Luc had already begun his professional carreer.
After going to McGill, Luc Boivin continued to seek for more
specialized training session on percussion instruments of other musical cultures.
He work on latin percussion at the "Drummers
Collective" in New York with Gene Golden and Frank Malabé in 1984-85,
with a grant from the Canada Arts Council.
During the following years, he also made frequent trips to Los
Angeles and New York to study with master such as Alex
Acuna, Gerry Steinhold et Glen
Velez (framed drums).
In Montreal, he participated in many master classes, in particular
with Mino Cilénu and Georges Rodriguez (haitian music),
Raphaël
Artigliere (berimbau), Bruno Rose Genero and Francine Martel (djembe), and
Jean Émanuel
NDjock (percussion from Cameroun).
Finally, curious abot lectronic instruments, Luc followed training
sessions on MIDI and computer music.
