Training

Luc Boivin became interested in drumset and percussion at a very young age. He decided to take his first percussion lessons in 1969 at l'École de musique Vincent d'Indy in Montreal.

Fascinated by percussion instruments and firmly decided to continue studying, he was admitted the year after at McGill University's Faculty of music, in Pierre Béluse's class, and gradutated in 1978.

During his studies at McGill, Luc had the opportunity to be involved in many training experiences, particularly by playing in the McGill Percussion Ensemble where he discovered contemporary music. Before the end of his studies, Luc had already begun his professional carreer.

After going to McGill, Luc Boivin continued to seek for more specialized training session on percussion instruments of other musical cultures. He work on latin percussion at the "Drummers Collective" in New York with Gene Golden and Frank Malabé in 1984-85, with a grant from the Canada Arts Council.

During the following years, he also made frequent trips to Los Angeles and New York to study with master such as Alex Acuna, Gerry Steinhold et Glen Velez (framed drums).

In Montreal, he participated in many master classes, in particular with Mino Cilénu and Georges Rodriguez (haitian music), Raphaël Artigliere (berimbau), Bruno Rose Genero and Francine Martel (djembe), and Jean Émanuel NDjock (percussion from Cameroun).

Finally, curious abot lectronic instruments, Luc followed training sessions on MIDI and computer music.
